There are many internet service providers out there claiming high internet connections speeds and charge customers according to the value for the speed that they claim to provide. Some will even mention ‘on best effort basis’ so that they can justify their low connection speeds when unsatisfied customers clog their call center phone lines. As far as I am concerned, Malaysian internet service providers charge premium price for dinosaur-aged internet connection speed packages which has gone extinct in many developed countries. I wonder why our Malaysian government still can claim that we are a developed country with highly priced ancient internet speed packages. In fact I am using 512K Streamyx DSL internet access. I have no complains about it’s connection speed and reliability but it could have been cheaper. And I believe many would agree with me that many Streamyx call center agents can’t even speak proper English, sometimes that irritates me when I call them to complain about internet connection after heavy rain.

Many times, you may find that your internet connection speed may be slower than normal. There are many online services that provide internet connection speed test which can show your internet download and upload speed. The results may vary because of different test servers used at different locations. At least they can give you an average internet speed results.

Enter an area code (I just typed a dummy one, “123″) and select connection type (I chose “DSL” since I’m using Streamyx) and click “Go”.

McAfee Internet Connection Speedometer
Just click on “Click here to Test now” to start the online speed test.

ZDNet Broadband Speed Test
Click on item in “Select your location” to start the online speed test.

All the above may give slightly different results but that will allow you to find your average internet connection speed.
